Kyle: England were superb throughout. We played great rugby when in the right areas. Our forward pack were dominant. This is by far our most complete performance of the World Cup so far. Hopefully Ireland can complete a northern hemisphere double later today.

England captain Owen Farrell: “I thought Australia made that a brilliant game. They attacked throughout but our boys did well in defence and managed to get some field position off the back of it. We know when we have field position we can be pretty dangerous

“We did what was needed. We had the lead and Australia were throwing everything at us again. We wanted to play the game at our pace and we did that in the second half.

“The support has been brilliant. It is a massive privilege to play for England. Hopefully you see that when we play.”

Nate H: That was a professional, comprehensive and deserved victory in a highly pressurised knock out rugby environment. I even have all my nails for the semi. Very very well played Eng.

Philip West: What a performance from England. Physical, ruthless, lethal, and a first semi-final at a World Cup for twelve years. This is EXACTLY why we hired Eddie Jones. He knows what he’s doing at this level, and the players have stepped up for him.

Adam Salter: That was probably our best ever performance in a Rugby World Cup knockout match. Usually, they’ve been tight, nightly affairs, relying on pens and drop goals. We actually managed to outplay Australia and put four tries on the board!

  6. Injury to Jonny May?

    FT: England 40-16 Australia

Jonny May will be the headline on the medical bulletin. The England wing looked to twinge something in the final play…

  7. ‘Mostly spot on’

    FT: England 40-16 Australia

  8. ‘We can win this’

    FT: England 40-16 Australia

  9. ‘England lay down a marker’

    England 40-16 Australia

    Tom Shanklin

Former Wales international on BBC Radio 5 Live

This England team, they know deep inside that is a World
Cup-winning performance. The game management, the way they have beaten Australia
    is a huge confidence booster.

  10. Post update

New Zealand or Ireland? Either way, that semi-final will be seismic.

    Becky Grey

    BBC Sport at Oita Stadium

Pretty understated celebrations from the England players. A few handshakes and pats on the back and they’re done.

    Onto the semi-finals.

  12. Full-time

    England 40-16 Australia

Narrow margins, we thought. Suffocatingly tight they said.

In the end, it was England by an autobahn.

  13. Post update

    England 40-16 Australia

The gong sounds. Australia are still running the ball, raging against the dying of the light…

  14. Post update

  15. No try

    England 40-16 Australia

Not even a consolation score for Australia. Thousand-yard stares and chins on chests in the green and gold ranks as the try is ruled out and their Rugby World Cup campaign looks set to end with a whimper.

  16. Try review

    England 40-16 Australia

Marika Koroibete hares into the corner after a break-out move from deep from the Aussies.

But Jerome Garces wants to have a look back at a couple of passes in the build-up…

  17. ‘Fantastic second half from England’

    England 40-16 Australia

    Paul Grayson

Former England fly-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

Watson since his injury has looked like he has never had a
minute away from the game, he spotted it a mile off! England have run away with
it on the scoreboard, against Australia under Eddie Jones they smash them and
they have done it again today.

    Try – England 40-16 Australia

    Anthony Watson (con Farrell)

Kurtley Beale could not have telegraphed that pass any clearer is he had taken out a full-page advert in the Oita Express and Star.

The Australia full-back throws a long, looping mis-pass toward captain Michael Hooper out wide after thinking about it for a good half second.

Yoink. Anthony Watson is having that.

Easy intercept and under the posts.
